CHESTERTOWN — Join the Kent County Public Schools Family Support Resource Center for a free workshop with Sam Drazin of Changing Perspectives.
Drazin's virtual workshop "Fostering Self Advocacy" will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22 in the media center at Kent County Middle School in Chestertown.
Changing Perspectives seeks to create "more equitable, empathetic and inclusive communities" and focuses on the importance of social-emotional learning.
"Self-advocacy is an invaluable skill for youth with disabilities; however, many young people with disabilities lack the skills to advocate in the most productive ways," the Changing Perspectives website states. "Effective self-advocacy requires a solid understanding of one’s strengths, challenges and needs, along with the ability to communicate this essential information clearly."
Workshop participants will learn about strategies and resources that can help them to empower their students to feel confident in their uniqueness so they can collaborate and communicate with their peers in safe, respectful ways while getting their needs met.
Discussion topics will include: talking effectively with your young person about their disability/disabilities, helping your young person recognize their strengths and challenges and supporting your young person in gaining a better understanding of their identity.
Free dinner and childcare will be available.
Pre-registration is preferred, but not required. Register with the Family Support Resource Center by calling 410-778-5708 or emailing
