ROCK HALL — The Kent County Board of Education showed its support and appreciation for two departing members at this month's meeting.

The meeting held Monday, Dec. 12 was the last for Vice President Nivek Johnson and Dr. Wendy Costa.

Johnson has served on the board since 2019. Dr. Costa's tenure began in 2015.

Dr. Karen Couch, superintendent of Kent County Public Schools, presented Johnson and Dr. Costa with plaques recognizing their service.

"Your guidance and direction as a board member has strengthened the bond between the community and schools," the plaques read.
Couch said it was a pleasure to work with both of the board members.

"You have had such passion for the school system," Dr. Couch told them. "And you have brought a lot of expertise that we will definitely miss on the Board of Education."

Dr. Costa said her time on the board was a wonderful experience. She spoke about how hardworking everyone is in Kent County Public Schools.

"I want to thank Dr. Couch and other members of the board and everyone involved in the schools for making it a school district that is continuously improving," Costa said.

Johnson, whose grandmother previously served on the Board of Education, spoke about how he had long dreamed of being on the board.

Johnson thanked Dr. Couch and his fellow board members, Kent County Public Schools staff members and families.

He spoke about some of the highlights of his term in office and how the board rose to the meet challenges.

"I tell you, we might have flaws, but nothing can take the great things that Kent County has done over these last four years," Johnson said.

Board President Joe Goetz and members Trish McGee and Francoise Sullivan shared kind words about working with Dr. Costa and Johnson.

"I just really appreciate your friendship and your dedication to the students of Kent County, your dedication to the staff and teachers of Kent County, to the parents of Kent County," Goetz said. "I just can't thank you guys enough."
