ROCK HALL — An instructional assistant at Galena Elementary School was honored in December with the Golden Anchor Award for going above and beyond each day for her students.

ChriShyra Blackson was announced as the honoree at a Kent County Board of Education meeting held Monday, Dec. 12.

The Golden Anchor Award is presented each month to staff members or groups of employees who exemplify the mission and core values of Kent County Public Schools.

“Kent County Public Schools is an anchor organization that creates an environment of academic excellence through a collaborative, equitable and rigorous learning community,” the mission statement reads.

Nominations may be submitted by Kent County Public Schools staff members, parents and students.

At the Dec. 12 board meeting, Supervisor of Human Resources Dan Hushion read from Blackson's nomination form.

"Miss Shyra strives every day to create a loving environment that supports our students' academic excellence," Hushion read.

Hushion said Blackson is great at working with children with disabilities and that her care for students shows through.

"Miss Shyra goes above and beyond each and every day to get to each student's level, to make sure she is meeting their needs in every way she can," Hushion read from the nomination form. "She is an asset in our classroom and for all the students we have."
